Glycols and alternative antifreeze agents

Which one to choose?

With winter upon us, we thought we would try to shed some light on the options available for antifreeze agents.  When we think of antifreeze agents for closed systems we generally associate these with Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) or Mono Propylene Glycol (MPG).  MEG for use in non food contact and MPG for use in incidental food contact.  These two products are normally supplied as stand-alone products with inhibitor and biocide being added separately to the system.   Serious consideration should be given to the inhibitor package which must be compatible with all system components.

In recent years, development of the market has seen alternatives to these petroleum based products.  The BIO alternatives can be used in incidental food contact, some with NSF Certification.  There are also products which offer lower viscosity than MEG/MPG, saving on energy costs.

Inhibited Options

Chemiteq teamed up with Kilfrost in 2015 to supply inhibited antifreeze agents for use in closed systems.  Kilfrost have over 80 years experience in the antifreeze market and continue to develop the range, all with varying degrees of frost and heat protection.

The products offered are all inhibited with a high performance organic formulation which either meets or exceeds the ASTM D1384-05 corrosion test standard.  The inhibitor is suitable for use with multi-metals including aluminium.  Furthermore, when dosed at the recommended level, the products are biostatic.  It is highly recommended that glycols are added to the system at a minimum 25% as product.

The Cooltrans range of products are based on different fluids with one being NSF certified for use in industrial and agricultural applications where there is a possibility of incidental food contact.

The LV range is unique in that it offers non-toxic Low Viscosity fluids which have been engineered to reduce system pressure drops, reduce pumping costs and increase the efficiency of closed system cooling circuits.

The Kilfrost range is offered with regular system healthchecks as part of the service.  This includes an analysis of system water prior to dosing, an analysis a week after dosing and six monthly thereafter.  If anything changes in the system, this can be picked up at an early stage and remedial action can be taken.  Recommendations are included in our analysis report.

When something goes wrong in a system with individually dosed MEG/MPG products, who do you turn to?
